Gaecheon Art Festival is the first festival of all local cultural and art festival in Korea. It is held annually from October. 3 to October 10, to commemorate the victory of Jinjuseong Battle (during the Imjinwaeran war, 1592) and hand down the spirit of Dangun, the legendary founder of the country.
This festival was begun in 1949 under the name of 'Yeongnam Art Festival' to commemorate the first anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan and to stimulate the development of Korean arts and culture. Since then, as the best art festival of the country, it has been held annually without fail except Korean War in 1950 and the military Coup on October 26, 1979.
The official name of this event changed from 'Yeongnam Art Festival' into 'Gaecheon Art Festival' in 1959. The celebration features various cultural and art events including 60 small events in 7 parts, such as Costume Parade, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival, Jinju Bullfighting, Nam Insu Singing Competition, and so on.

Jinju Nongae Festival
Jinju Nongae Festival is held annually in May. This festival amis to unify traditional arts of Jinju area such as 'Uiambyeolje', 'Jinju Mask Dance Hanmadang', and others. Also it is to commemorate the patriotic spirit of Nongae-a symbol of patriotism & integrity, and 70,000 soldiers died in the Jinjuseong Battle during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. This festival is very famous for its unique and inimitable materials that represent cultural features of Jinju.
Nongae Festival is held in the spring being focused on the traditional arts, and Gaecheon Art Festival is held in the autumn being focused on the fine arts. These two festivals are expected to make Jinju be reborn as a city of festival being matched with its reputation, a true home of cultural and art festivals.

During the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, the General Gim, Si-min and 3,800 government troops flew pungdeungs(pungdeung: a lamp that was flown high with using the wind) and floated lamplights down the river with torches to signal the support forces, in the Jinjuseong Battle. Also, they used these lamps, for a military strategy, to keep off the Japanese invaders' river-crossing and to communicate with their families stayed outside the castle.
Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival (Yudeung: floating lamps down the river) was begun to commemorate the patriotic spirit of 70,000 militia corps and government troops who died for their country in the second Jinjuseong Battle(year of Gyesa, 1593) and to hand down the tradition of Yudeung. This festival had been held in Jinju for a long time, then in 1949, a present type of Yudeung festival was established and has been held annually since. In 2002, this festival was designated as the "specialized local festival" by the Ministry of Culture & Tourism to be run more fruitfully.

Jinju Traditional Bullfighting Festival
Jinju Bullfighting is the first Bullfighting of all Korean traditional bullfighting. It was originated from the Three Kingdom Period and has been maintained as its original form up to the present. This festival is held on a nationwide scale during the Gaecheon Art Festival, annually. Since 2001, the standing Bullfighting has been held every other week to attract tourist's interest.

Located in the southwestern part of Gyeongnam Province, the city is bordered by Masan City and Haman-gun to the east, and Hadong-gun to the west. Sacheon city and Goseong-gun adjoin the city at the southern edge, and Sancheong-gun and Uiryeong-gun share the city's northern boundary. Gyeongjeonseon Railway and Namhaean Expressway that connect Yeongnam and Honam run east and west at Jinju. And Daejeon~Tongyeong Expressway that connects Daejeon~Jinju~Tongyeong runs north and south, so that Jinju plays an important role as a bridge of cultural exchanges in Korea. Jinju is linked with Sacheon City to the south, Geochang and Geumcheon to the north. This makes Jinju a transportational hub that can connect sea routes and land routes. Jinju is geographically located between 127 degrees 53 minutes and 28 degrees 22 minutes in the east longitude, and 35 degrees 3 minutes and 26 minutes in the north latitude.
The total area within the city boundaries amounts to 712.8km2 taking up 6.8% of Gyeongnam Province. And it ranks 50th among 234 local self-governing bodies in Korea and 6th in Gyeongnam Province. Its distance from east to west is 43.7km, and is 33.2km from north to south. City's administrative districts comprise 1 eup, 15 myeons, and 21 dongs.
West inland of Gyeongnam including Jinju is a basin region and the climate of this area is extreme both in summer and winter. Annual temperature variation is 25.5℃. Jinju is situated in a 'humid subtropical climate(Cfa)' zone, and localized torrential downpour occurs frequently in Jinju. It has heavy fogs in the spring and autumn. The average annual temperature is 13~14℃, and the annual precipitation is 1,382mm.

Jinju City's flag symbolizes the image of Jinju as a developing center of western Gyeongnam Province and an origin of national culture. Also it represents prosperous development of our city's welfare and its good living conditions.
The square represents the advancing spirit, transportation that runs in all directions, and the developmental image of economic prosperity. The circle represents Jinjuseong castle, a symbolic place of Jinju as a city of scenic spots and historical relics, and also symbolizes united Jinju citizens. The square and the circle are combined to represent the Earth. The color of the ground, blue, represents the Heaven. The whole image of the flag symbolizes harmonious Cheonjiin(heaven, earth, and man), light and hope.
Nongae
Nongae character symbolizes the Namgang River, Uiam(Righteous Rock) and patriotic spirit. Based on the historical facts, we made the image of a friendly women with using a image of Nongae that shows the strong will, and modern women of the 21st century that live their lives sturdily. In Nongae character, a classical image and a modern image are integrated harmoniously. This Character has been produced on a commercial scale for publicizing the image of Jinju and for using it in the various fields.
The flowers of pomegranate
The flowers of pomegranate are red colored and come out at the end of branches.
Usually they have 5 spear-shaped petals, blossom and bear fruits in the early summer and last until the autumn. It symbolizes the citizen's loyalty, firm volition, power of solidarity, and the image of healthy citizens.
Jujube Tree
Ziziphus jujube is one of the deciduous forest-tree that belongs to the Rhamnaceae. As one of traditional tree species, Ziziphus jujube is widely distributed in all parts of Jinju. It is strong to the cold and pollution, and easy to grow. Since old times, it's fruit has been recognized as the best of all fruit, and it has symbolized the spirit of integrity and loyal citizenship.
Snowy Heron
Belonging to the white heron family, it's whole body is sheer white. Snowy Heron has a raincoat-shaped plumage from her back to tail. Graceful and specklessly neat and pure, she symbolizes the integrity of the classical scholar, and citizens that pursue the learning.
Jinju is a hub city of southern Korea. From old times, Jinju was a fountainhead of national culture and spirit. As a city that has held 1,000-year-old historical heritage of the ancient city, Jinju has been well renowned as a home of patriotic spirit, education, culture and art.
Jinju was an ancient city of Goryeonggaya in the Gaya Era. This city was called 'Geoyeolseong' of Baekje in the Three Kingdom Era, and was called 'Geoyeolju', 'Cheongju', and 'Gangju' in the Unified Silla Era. Name of this city was changed into 'Jinju' for the first time in the 23rd year of King Taejong of the Goryeo Dynasty(940). It became 'Jinju-mok', one of 12 moks(local administrative units in Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty) in the 2nd year of King Seongjong(983). In the 33rd year of King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty(1896), administrative district of the nation was reorganized with 13 provinces. At that time Jinju began to belong to Gyeongsangnam-do, and became capital town of Gyeongsangnam-do. And provincial governor started to reside at Jinju. On April 1, 1925, Busan replaced Jinju as provincial capital. On August 15, 1949, the government of the Republic of Korea was established and 'the local self-government system' was started. At that time, Jinju-bu was raised to Jinju-si(city) and started to have mayor of the city. On January 1, 1995, in accordance with 'the Law pertaining to the establishment of Urban-Rural Integrated City', Jinju-si and Jinyang-gun became extinct and were merged into one integrated Jinju-si(city).
